5 Steps to Start Your Book Even If You’re Afraid, Unclear, or Still Healing

“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” – John 8:32

Let me start with this: You don’t need to be fully healed, perfectly ready, or completely confident to start writing your book. You just need courage. And even a little is enough.

For five long years, I wrestled with my first book, Think Up to Get Up. Not because I didn’t have the content. But because I didn’t believe my voice mattered. I thought I needed more credentials, more confidence, or more clarity. But here’s what I’ve learned: God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.

So Why Haven’t You Started Writing?

It’s not laziness. It’s fear. It’s overthinking. It’s trauma telling you your voice isn’t powerful. And maybe, like me, you’ve been waiting for the "perfect time."

But here’s the truth: the perfect time doesn’t exist. The only thing God is asking for is your obedience—not your perfection.

Here Are 5 Simple Steps to Start Writing with Courage:

1. Silence the Inner Critic

That voice in your head saying you’re not good enough? That’s not from God.Your doubts may speak loudly, but they’re not the truth. The Word of God has the final say.

Try this: Write down every limiting belief. Then replace it with truth from Scripture or your lived experience.

2. Name Your Story

Your story is not random. There’s a problem you’ve survived that someone else is still trapped in. That’s the power of your testimony.

Ask yourself: What pain have I overcome? What lesson did it teach me? Who needs to hear it?

3. Break the “I’m Not Healed Yet” Lie

Healing is a process. And guess what? Writing is part of that process.Your scars don’t disqualify you—they prove that God brought you through.

Reminder: You’re not writing from the wound. You’re writing from the wisdom the wound gave you.

4. Start Small and Stay Honest

Writing isn’t about having 8 hours a day—it’s about starting with what you have. Three honest minutes of writing a day can change your life.

Try this: Write what you wish someone had told you when you felt stuck. Just 3 minutes. Don’t edit. Don’t filter.

5. Remember Your Why

You’re not writing for applause. You’re writing because somebody’s freedom is on the other side of your obedience.

Declare this: “I’m writing my book because my story carries the power to unlock someone else’s.”

Final Word

You don’t need more time—you need more belief. You don’t need to be healed—you need to be honest. You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to start.

There’s someone waiting to hear your story… not when you’ve “arrived,” but right now, in the middle of the journey.

Your voice has value.Your pain has purpose.Your words can set people free.

So write.
